Wrap in tissue rather than newspaper, keep the box somewhere cool rather than in a loft, and store flat rather than stacked under weight. Those three cover almost every way an ornament degrades between seasons.

Only for the foam. The moulded protection an ornament ships in is better than most storage boxes sold for the purpose, so keeping it is worth the shelf space — particularly for the first few years when a collection is small enough to fit.
