Everything that goes wrong here goes wrong at the ordering stage.
Order at least three weeks before the photo, collect everyone's chest measurement rather than their claimed size, and keep to one colour family. Those three things prevent almost every version of this going wrong.
SeasonalA camera at group distance flattens fine detail. Large shapes and high contrast survive; thin outlines and small text turn to noise. If you can read the shirt from across a room, it will read in the photo.
Wash and dry them once before the photo if you can. It removes packing creases better than an iron does, and it means nobody is ironing a printed shirt on the morning and glazing the cotton.
